I’m am the owner of a small construction company in Southeast Michigan. Our current scope of work includes bathrooms, basements, kitchens, and additions. Depending on the size and complexity of the project we can and have done all aspects of the projects including in some instances foundations, tile work, etc. I have had difficulty finding good qualified help who is willing to show up on time and put a full days worth of work in. I feel at this point it is the only thing stopping the company from moving forward.
Like most companies the team that forms your company is your biggest asset. Even if you are not looking for a position I would be interested on anyone suggestions on where they find good workers.
I hope I find some help!

Tom,
You are in the same boat as the entire industry. Have you considered the approach of taking the time to train someone from the ground up.? This takes time but at least you don't have to un-teach their bad habits.

Thanks for your reply. I tried to do that last summer. I hired a couple of descent "nail pounders" tried to teach them a little. One showed some posibilities but hurt himself out side of work and the other was just thick upstairs. Biggest problem I had was guys that were honest. Even hired a 45+ year old "carpenter" thinking that he would bring some maturity and experience to the crew but instead I think he corrupted the one "thick" guy and a laborer worse! After I let him go I found out they were leaving job sites early or not working at all and just sitting in thier trucks. They even went as far as to tell one client to tell me if I asked that they had left at 4 when they left at 2- 2:30! The damnest thing is that the client did it!

Tom, I have had just as big a problem finding a contractor who does not compromise. Last one poured footer on partially frozen ground ..... what was not frozen had 10" of water in hole that was 30" out of level. House next door had foundations poured w/ snow inside forms, had holes at bottom where snow had melted after setup. His trim work looked good, but .........
I am just north of u O/S of Flint. Am looking for good group to work w/.
Learningjim,
I have had the same problem. I seem to be better at subs then with employees! I've got a good trench footing guy out of Howell/ Brighton area. I wouldn't have him do your block work but he's a good trench guy! I also have two good electrians out of Hartland area and a good plumber from the same area. Leave me a message if you want there names and numbers! Always remember you usally get what you pay for with subcontractors! Thanks for the reply.
Tom,
Drop me an email, maybe we can help each other out.

Hi Tom,
I would be interested in learning more about what you do. I am currently a frustrated Architect and I have been doing residential design in the metro area for about 10 years. Mostly remodels and additions in the Oakland area.
I do wood working and construction on the side. Mostly for family and friends. I would really like to get into a construction company that is interested in doing quallity work. I have been on many construction sites that I am suprised make it through inspection much less look like a quallity job.
Let me know if you want to talk more.
