DeWalt 706

| Posted in Tools for Home Building on March 19, 2002 05:25am

*
Friday afternoon, someone ran up to the job we were working on, grabbed one of our DeWalt 705’s with a brand new blade and took off. The saw was in the garage, 50 yards from the road. The crew was upstairs. No one saw a thing except a trail of saw dust on the ground going out to the road. Man, if I could just get my hands on one of those thieves……I’d break both of his with a 2×4.

I need to replace it. I’m considering the 706 which tilts both ways for $100 more.

Anybody have one, and is it worth the extra cash?

Ed.

You also get another inch of verticle cut for base and crown because the 706 is belt-drive while the 705S is direct.

*Ed- Mike Guertin reviewed the 706 in FHB when it first came out..........Jeez, Ed, that sucks. One of the worst things to do is to steal a man's tools. -Ken

*I have both the 705 and the 706. The 706 is worth the extra money. Belt drive - smoother start. Bevels both ways. Cuts taller base. Nicer switch. I use my Makita slider for the stuff the other two don't handle.

*yea those punks took that 705 to the pawn shop where they got cash to buy the meth they need for the weekend.Find the heaviest saw to replace, that way it will slow em down enough to find that right 2x to whack them over the head with.do a search, there are plenty here who say the makita is the saw of saws, while others say hitachi or bosch...

*I've got one Makita slider, and it is a sweet machine.706 it is.Now, if I can just find one locally and not get stabbed. Amazon has them for $399. That might be hard to beat.We use wood (homemade) mitre box stands mostly....from now on, it's screws through the base. That'll slow 'em down.Ed.

*3/16 bolts Ed . That would make it harder. Have to have a socket on a drill to get it. I built my table so big for that reason. 14 footer lag srewed to horses, saw bolted to table. Sqaure drive or hex would be good thinking also.

*That suck about the saw. Just had a Hilti drill model 75 (yeah the $1500.00 one) walk. Makes you want to mount a turret on the gang box don't it. If your deductible isn't too high it's not so bad. What in the hell are people thinking? Has anyone else considered stealing another man's tools? Shouldn't the possibillity of getting a claw hammer in the brain stem enough of a deterrent?

*b Another homeowner. One day we will rule the world.Ed, did you keep a record of the serial #?I was doing a reno on a building in the bad part of tulsa town and as the days grew longer I quit taking everything to the van at night. First just left the big stuff no one would want to steal; sawhorses and such, then gradually the smaller things; extension cords, smaller handtools till finally just took my good electricals home. Then one morning I show up and the place is cleaned out wall to wall except the cleaning supplies they had gathered in a bucket and left by a window, something must have spooked them.Never found out who did it. A couple weeks later I'm on the front porch in the morning doing something and I hear this muffled m-80 sound and yelling. I think 'man, these guys don't quit, early morning and they're partying already or still', then the yelling wasn't ha ha stuff but ' oh my god' sounding from the heart. So I drop what I'm doing and go tearing across the neighbors yards and around the corner and find this guy running around his yard with 1 1/2 foot flames leaping up his back and shoulders. I get him down on the ground and roll the flames out. Skin from his hands peeled back, hair gone, a mess, and his buddy walks up like a robot with his hands out and burned, in a bit better shape. It was your portable meth lab that exploded in the basement of the house. Then the three ring circus of ambulances, news cameras, police, firetrucks, ATF and DEA, bombsquad and the host of unlookers. They were jaked out when they were making the stuff and blew themselves up. There is absolutely no sanity with these guys taking that stuff. The thefts are getting more and more bold like your 'daylight & in the building' theft of your saw. Drugstore cowboy stuff only now they are stalking out contractors. That's why I totally refuse to buy anything from a pawn shop since such a large percentage of the merchandise is stolen. You guys that buy from pawnshops are just fueling the fire and probably got a dark side hiding out in there somewhere since you're buying stolen merchandise. Sorry for the rant but this crap bothers me.

*Rez, the biggest problem with these guys is that you could use that 705 to cut their hands off and they wouldn't know it for at least a minute or two.Dhuh whaaa...?
