Dewalt 9pc. hole saw kit (Big Dissappoin
I recently bought Dewalt’s #D180002 9pc. electrician’s hole saw kit. It has hole saws ranging from 7/8″-2-1/2″ diameters along wwith two “quick change” mandrels. The spring loaded mandrel takes hole saws from 1-1/4″ up to 6″ hole saws whereas the smaller mandrel only takes from 9/16″ – 1-3/16″. This smaller mandrel (#D1810) has to be the most useless thing Dewalt ever put out. Dewalt claims this mandrel “offers tool-free quick-release collar to prevent hole saws from locking to the mandrel”.
I’ve tried several hole saws with this mandrel and have had NO trouble unscrewing the hole saws from the mandrel. I used one hand on the drill’s chuck while the other hand simply unscrewed the hole saws. I didn’t need any tools OR any quick change mandrel.
Here’s my beef with this mandrel: it claims on the hole saw box to rotate the collar on the mandrel in one direction to release the hole saw. This is useless as all I have to do to “release” the hole saw is to unscrew it. If I screw the collar in the opposite direction IT WILL NOT tighten against the hole saw. The collar even shows a symbol of an unlocked padlock with an arrow pointing in one direction (the direction to unlock). The collar will continuously spin in either direction.
Any of guys out there own any of these mandrels Dewalt makes?
All I’m asking you guys is how come the mandrel claims to “unlock” when it doesn’t even be tight against the hole saw anyways.
P.S. Yes the hole saws screw on the threaded shaft tight but this “quick change” mandrel collar is useless.
