Dewalt Service Stinks

notrix | Posted in General Discussion on June 25, 2004 03:34am

Hi All,

Just a bit of venting here. I have a 50 day old Dewalt D55155 4gal air compressor. When going to change the oil I discovered the drain plug had been over torqued and stripped out the threads. Lots of metal shaving came out with the oil. I’m pretty positive it didn’t contaminate the oil just got flushed out, so all I need is the small cover that has the plug and dip stick.

I zip 30 miles down to the San Diego service center and explain the situation. They say it will take 2 weeks. I say can’t do that, need it by Monday. They say too bad. I ask for them to just give me the part and I’l do it myself. No way they say. Ok I’ll buy it. They say $9 and $7 for the gasket kit and my warranty will be voided..what’s your phone number? My phone number? Are they trying to get me in the system or what? They follow it up with some BS that “all tool manufactuers void warrantys if you fix them”. Kinda like Milwaukee HoleShooters that come with spare brushes. Or Senco who quickly sent me replacement parts and instructions. C’mon!

Anyway add a rotten condecending attitude on top of this and I’m gone before more attitude can effect my day.

I then see a sign that says “90 day money back satisfaction guarantee” for Dewalt tools. So I figure what the heck, they could have given me $15 of parts ( probably $5 out of pocket) but instead they have to give me a brand new compressor courtesy of HD.

Moral:
Well… in San Diego at least avoid DeWalt service center. By the book company stooges who have no clue what being in the field is like and will try to bs you as it’s industry standards. Also a little investigation revealed they are notorious for this sort of thing.

I have 2 Dewalt tools, the compressor and the mitersaw stand and love the design of both, but I’ll think twice about any further purchaces.

As a final note I also have a Max SuperFramer and it was jamming too much. Rep came to my house and could find nothing wrong with it but replaced it anyway. That’s service!

Warren

It may well be the local service center that is causing the service problem but Dewalt has long had metalurgy problems. Most of my problems with their tools have been similar to yours or related, like the threads on the arbor of my portable tablesaw that stripped right off the first time I changed the blade.

I really hate to do this since it's after the fact.....But, I'd never own a compressor that requires oil.

After first hand witnessing  more then one $300.00 compressor malfuntion and blow dip stick and oil over very expensive homeowner stuff...I'd recommend oil less.

I'm sick of pc.  I have a less than 2 yo 12" compound mitre saw.  It was shipped with warped cast aluminum fences from the factory, which had it sitting idle though the factory did send me replacements free.  Now it doesn't fire up, pretty sure it's the switch that's gone bad.

I'm working 100 hour weeks 7 weeks in a row, no time off, I don't have time to fix a good high-end saw that should work.  So I'm hanging strip pine paneling with a @%$ circ saw (not the right tool for the job).

Wish I knew who's tools to buy.  I was thinking of switching to dewalt, the only tool of theirs I have is a sawzall and it's been pretty good.

Milwaukee or Bosch for the CMS or SCMS. The drills are covered here  too....

      Rol-aire for the compressor.

Life is not a journey to the grave with the intention of arriving safely in a pretty and well preserved body, but rather to skid in broadside, thoroughly used up, totally worn out, and loudly proclaiming....                                                                   WOW!!!   What a Ride!

I've had damn good service from the PC repair center in Tampa... I'm in N. Fla and got parts to rebuild my pancake PC compressor UPS'ed in two days no problem. I am happy with Delta too... New Planer I bought had a pully come loose after a few weeks and ruined the keyway. They were happy to send me both pullys and a drive belt under warranty even though I was installing myself... It did not void warranty either.

As for DeWalt... I have an old friend that works for the Repair center in Jacksonville... Even with that advantage, their service still sucks. So, they are way down on my list of tool suppliers. I tend to stick with Milwalkee, PC, Makita... Allthough, I just bought a Skil sawsall because it was only $59. Who knows how long it will last? It sure was cheap though. It seems well made for that price. Only Skil tool I've seen in years that wasn't DYI grade crap. --- BRICK

PC has been good about sending stuff out to me for repairs.  I'm just a little frustrated of not having much time, and not wanting to spend it fixing tools that aren't that old.  I was really irritated at them for sending warped fences out, the part has a machined aluminum face and there's no way their qc should have allowed it out.  and now the same tool to not start up.  I need to find their local repair center.

pc/delta repair and parts have been good to me. however Default like I in a couple of other post  has a long way to go in their customer service. They suck maybe its the Ca branch but the one in anaheim and I heard whittier sucks also.
