Diamonds at 19.2″ on tape measures

Mjones79 | Posted in General Discussion on September 29, 2005 04:18am

Does anyone know how to use the diamonds at 19.2″ on tape measures? I know it’s for some kind of spacing, but I’m not sure which.

It's another lay out method that will work for 8' sheet goods, and conserve material.

Calvin's reply was good, but... The "three strikes" refers to the new rule that each time a person is offensive with their language or doesn't follow the rules that Taunton has set out for this forum, you are "awarded" a strike. Three strikes and you're kicked out of the forum for a year. Things were getting out of hand in the Tavern.

It's one of the diamonds you'll find on your tape.

To those who know - this may be obvious. To those who don't - I hope I've helped.

19.2 inch spacing showed up around a dozen years ago with the proliferation of silent floor or wooden I joist.  The manufacturers would let you use 19.2 inch spacing to save one joist every 8 feet.  I only did it on one house.

I used to tell people it was metric spacing!

    Have a good day

It stinks, doesn't it ? Not one person told him it was really a cubit.

I am very disapointed. It usually takes about 20 facetious replies before anyone even includes the real answer....that's not a mistake, it's rustic

  6. MisterT | Oct 01, 2005 11:48pm | #27

It has it's origins in stadium building.

probably first used byr the roman architects designing the Collosseum.

It corresponds to the average room needed for seatin per person in bleacher type seating.

In 1927 the International Architectural Seating Standards Institute adapted it as the AHAW or Averavge Human A$$ Width.

Curiously in roman times the accepted value was a mere 16-5/8"

but with the discovery of the Americas and the advent of modern farming and fast food it has risen over the years to the current value of 19-13/64"

The next scheduled IASSI conference will be in 2008.

the buzz is that the 20" mark will be surpassed and possibly 21"!!!

whatever the result, hold on to your tape measures because old standard models will surely be fetching a good $ on the antique circuit!!
