Did i tear apart half my wall for no reason?
Hello,
I am completely inexperienced in home interior and trying to do a slight workup on a very old apartment. I started to break down one of my walls from wall putty and paint(Or at least I think its wall putty, found a rock wall after it). Before I go further I need to know if I’m making things worse or better. 1) Is it wall putty I’m breaking? 2) Should i replace it since its gone untouched for a very very long time 3) what should i buy to now fill the wall with?
Thanks in advance :))

not the best picture but you appear to have plaster walls and you have been removing the final coat, revealing the base coat. You probably should stop and try to reapply a skim coat (you might need to get someone to do that since it's a`n experience-based skill that is hard to just do well without a lot of practice and know-how.
Since I'm not too familiar with the terms I'm gonna rephrase so nothing gets lost in translation(not a native speaker). After removing the plaster I hit completely hard rock that cant be changed in any way and logically not allowed to, is that referred to as a base coat? Do you have recommendations as in what skim coat to use? I cant hire a professional so i have to fix this myself :D. Thanks for your help in advance
You could likely have brick or concrete block behind the “base coat” if your description of “completely hard rock” is correct.
Take a nail and try to pound it straight in…..
Or better yet, use a masonry drill bit and drill as far as you can go.
I would stop tearing out at this point. Buy a product called Plaster Weld, and paint it on the wall where you've removed the finish coat of plaster. Buy a 5 gallon bucket of drywall compound (Green lid from Home Depot is fine). Get a 12 in. steel float and a 6 in. taping knife. Use the 6 in. knife to spread the compound on the wall, and the 12 in. float to smooth it out in a thin layer. Smooth it as much as you can with the float. Let it harden. Sand down the high spots (be prepared for a lot of dust), and repeat until it looks good. Look on the main site here for any video by Myron Ferguson for some ideas on how this process looks. Good luck!
Andy,
How important is the plaster weld? I applied inside corner bead with all purpose compound where old plaster wall and new drywall ceiling meet. Didn't paint the plaster with anything. Seemed to go on fine but now I'm seeing mentions of plaster weld and glue in the compound. Is it likely to fail?
It helps, but it's not critical.

for the sanding part, this tool, sanding screens, and a good shopvac with filter will help you get this done while limiting the amount of sanding dust that gets on everything and into your nose and lungs.
Hello, I want to thank everyone for their help :)). I'm gonna start rebuilding it in the next few days. Might share how my progress goes. Thanks again
