What is the max wattage that you can dim with a standard (?) dimmer that fits into a wall box? I recall a problem with heat build-up if you wire in too many lights, too much wattage.

Hello Irish --Welcome aboard and happy sailing. Check the package for your dimmer for max watts ie ( 600) and divide that out by the max watts your lights will take ie (75, 90) and use that as a starting point. Use less of the capacity if you are ganging two together in a box. Also from my experience use the two gang box with the single mud ring and you will have room to spare and give the dimmer some breathing room. I am sure other will have more for you so take it away Gentlemen. Mike
Thanks for the input. I figured tht I would need to check out avail dimmers/capacity at friendly (?) elect supply house. This is for a brother-in-law project and I can't look too closely over his shoulder - just enought to keep him out of trouble. Two gang w/mud ring would be my choice but he is past that point.

Irish--If he has allready put in single gang then discourage him from modifing the heat sink wings above and below the screw holes--I have seen them cut away to make the covers lay flat to the wall--just look around at different covers to find on that will lay over the heat sink and still touch the wall. Other than that he shouldn't be able to get himself in to much trouble. Mike
Definitely will watch out for any snipper mods to the hardware - good point.
The majority of single gang dimmers are rated for 600 Watts. I had to get a 1000 Watt for the dining room chandelier, hard to find and it was like $60, about ten times the money. I've seen them up to 2000 Watts, but they take a two gang box, and have a heat sink instead of a plastic wall plate.
