I have installed a new dishwasher. This is a first time install so all parts are new. Water come out the airgap first time we used the dishwasher. The drain is not backing up so there is no back pressure there. There is no garbage disposal. Everything looks from a connection standpoint like it should. The air gap is a plastic model sold by HD. What should I look for to correct this problem?

Another day, another tool.
Did as you advised and it drains great. Is there any problem not using a airgap?
We almost never use an air gap, just run the drain hose high as it passes through the cabinet wall between the D/W space and the undersink cab. That is the most common type of installation done today and is the least likely to cause problems.
It is my understanding that under certain specific and unusual circumstances, stuff from the kitchen drain may get siphoned into the dishwasher. The gap prevents that.

Use the air gap if at all possible - it's in the plumbing code in many municipalities. You have all the symptoms of an incorrect hookup. Reverse the hoses on on the air gap connections.
ive installed hundreds of dishwashers, and the air gap thingy is un heard of here in ontario canada. just loop the drain hose as high as posible and run it into the drain pipe under the sink before the trap.
BTW never run a dishwasher into a garburator housing inspite of the nice convenient fitting on the garburator.
the dw soap is very corrosive and will ruin aluminum fittings in no time
Don't bother with it. Just bypass it but leave the airgap installed in case conversation lags at your next party and ytou need to get things going {G}
