I have a new Dell laptop with Vista Home Premium.
I’m a Nervous Nelly about having a disk which is unpartitioned. All my desktops have always had 3 partitions, but Vista reports that my old standby, Partition Magic 8 does not work with Vista.
Does anyone have any experience with disk partitioning software for Vista?

I don't have Vista but do computer repair on the side. You should absolutely not have any issues. BUT, if your worried just back up your data. The machine should have come with a "restore" disk. Sounds like it's pretty new "to you" so I wouldn't think you have too much data on it yet. 2 gig USB drives are a cheap way to backup and transfer your files from your other computer if you haven't already done that, i.e., if you don't have a home network
I DO understand, but here is my issue.
I am typing this on a 9 month old machine, with hand-picked components.
So far, I have had to re-install XP Pro 7 times. Format C, reinstall software, reinstall programs. On virtual drive E:, all my data files were safe. Partitioned.
I don't trust ANY operating system not to screw up. Data is on a different drive and backed up. Programs in D:. That's it. O/S on C:. Nothing else.
I'm looking at Paragon Software, and Acronis Software. Both claim to work with Vista.
Hopefully someone has some experience with either of these two products.Quality repairs for your home.

You could probably just buy another HD or two and put them in your box, for the same money. Then you have actual separate physical disks. Even better for the particular kind of peace of mind that you want...
Yeh... That'll work.
Really expensive for a new laptop. Or for any laptop.
Like batteries for tools. If I add a drive, I may as well get a new box.Quality repairs for your home.

Dang !! I should have re-read your posts before replying with that. I didn't realize we were talking about a laptop. You are correct, sir.=0)

"Really expensive for a new laptop. Or for any laptop.

It will fit in your pocket and not need an extra powerpack. Its USB cable takes up as much room as the drive.Or go to http://www.geeks.com/ and buy their 2.5 Seagate laptop harddrive and install it in a 2.5" USB case.Never use a 3.5' harddrive as a portable. They cannot take bumping and require a seperate power supply.
sorry, but a while. don't know if you solved your problem.look at carbonite.com for online backup. unlimited storage for $50 bucks a month. very, very, VERY cool. Nice EASY interface, works in the background - NEVER WORRY ABOUT hd crash. Featured on NPR.org - do a search you can hear the clip.backup your data drive. do a COMPLETE system restore to factory specs: use vista to divide your drives and you're good to go.never heard of those programs, so personally, i'd "google or yahoo" them and see commentsa great resource is groups.google.com -- search newsgroups and their is tons of info.
I will, thanks.
It just seems that every time we have a great product line (in this case Powerquest), and they get taken over (Symantic), the buyers never realize the great, loyal following they have in the purchased products.Quality repairs for your home.

Love to hear what you finally did with you disk partitions...I did come across another online backup. The first 2 gigs are free. Mozy.com the "free" version is for NON BUSINESS which might apply for you.
Acronis has both partitioning and backup software. I'll end up going that way.Quality repairs for your home.

Aron, just bought an E-521 and tried to get XP-Pro as I have on my Dimension 4700 -request denied. 22 days later while trying to upgrade the bios sent by dell, it cooked the mother board . "Hello dell does it rust, it's on the porch come get it". They sent me to the sales team(damage control group in Portland OR. --ps dell is from texas- who would give me XP free but XP-PRO for $199) I took the bait as the box is ok but we will talk again. They sent qual serve to fix the box and it was very well done.
A few weeks after my buy they were offering vista or xp and I was bummed out. Vista caused me to online up grade every thing in the world to talk with it even then it was in the not 100% match mode, not a nice thing. Wack them hard if you have been abused, esclate those Indian techs to their supervisors up several levels if you are not satisfied. Paddy
I too would like to make a computer upgrade. I want to go with Dell but reading their catalog (July 2007), the only OS offered is a choice between Vista "Home Basic" or "Home Premium." I want neither, what ever happened to the XP OS offer you mentioned? Have they gone back to their old poor business practices?
W, did ya chat with a Dell sales person or only read the offers in print or on line? I would figure out the package that I want. call their sales folk and when the closing moment of the sale happens tell them you want XP OR NO DEAL. If they say they can't. you ask to speak to their supervisor. then the manager if necessary. Give it a shot, It's your $$$$. Let us know what happens. Paddy
