I will be tiling a bathroom in my basement. I will be tiling over the existing concrete basement floor which is an engineered floating floor. I live on the front range of Colorado with expansive soils. There are no major cracks in this ten year old floor. Do I still need a substrate like Ditra or can I apply thinset to the concrete and set my tiles?

Any time you tile over a concrete slab it's a gamble. Ditra is insurance, no more, no less.
Thanks.
I appreciate your reply. I'm kind of a belt and suspenders kind of guy so I may go with the Ditra.
I should add that we did a small bathroom downstairs over 30 years ago. This was before even cement board was in common use, so it's thinset on concrete. The floor is still in perfect shape (except for the tiny ding where I dropped a putty knife on it back in July).
I just finished doing the same thing. Set 300+sq ft of 16x16" travertine. Just did all my grouting today as a matter of fact.
I considered Ditra but figured the concrete hadn't had any cracks open in 60 years so why would it now...unless Murphy pops his head up.
Like Dan said though..putting the Ditra down can't hurt other than setting you back a buncha sheckles and a few hours.
Just use a real good thinset like Laticrete. Trowel it down with the flat edge of your trowel really really good to fill all voids then comb out a nice even area to set your tile into. I also "always" back-butter my tiles. You should be good to go!
I need to put together some photos of it 100% done next week.
Have fun : ))
Thanks.
I appreciate your prompt reply.
