I have an attached garage that I want to do woodworking in. It is currently un-finished and I wish to insulate and hang sheetrock. I had an electrician wire it for me.
My question: Do I need a permit for the insulation and drywall? There will not be any “permanent” heating installed. I will probably use some type of portable heat only occasionally. I live in Maynard, Massachusetts (west of Boston).
Thanks.

Did you need a permit for the electrical? Seems more important then insulation and drywall. Out here on the West Coast you would probably need to get a STFI permit(we call them Stiffies). Non structural projects can get over the counter Subject To Field Inspection permits. If any structural changes are made then the permit is reviewed for proper engineering. Either way they charge an arm and a leg.

Only someone who lives in Maynard can answer your question. Easier to just call the permit office and ask.
each town is different, but my guess is that the town will want you to pull a permit.
they'll likely want drawings and description.
as well as an estimated cost, cause most likely the permit price is basd on rthe estimated cost.
also expect your taxes to go up since you improved the value.

3S -- staple, spackle, shutup = no permit
It will probaly change it from an unfinished garage to a finished garage, you probaly should get a permit because it may cause problems when you eventually sell the house. the permit should be easy and not expensive, around here in slighty upstate NY it would probaly cost about 150. - 200. check your town bldg dept.
It's different in every jurisdiction. Here the law has long said that any job costing more than $300 requires a permit. Of course that isn't enforced any more. If it were, a decent paint job on one room would require a permit.

Tool,
I'm with Junkhound, "3S -- staple, spackle, shutup = no permit."
My no permit list includes:
Complete re-wire of house
Complete re-plumb of house
Removal of all load bearing walls, and replaced with steel I-beams.
Replacement of all windows and siding, and sheathing and subfloors.
Adding two baths.
etc, etc,............................
Basically only thing original is the majority or the framing and foundation
And you are worried about a little insulation and drywall? LOL

You just violated the 'shutup' part, now the local Gestapo in Wisconsin is heading for your house!
now the local Gestapo in Wisconsin ...."
Ya mean I'm coming after myself, LOL You do know I'm German.
Actually, in my town, there are no building records prior to '70 (and my house is WAY older), so I have free reign, unless caught in the act.

Junkhound said it-
Call your Building Department before you hang rock. Here in CT, they are religious about inspecting the rough electrical work, and if you rock it before inspection, they could have to remove the rock to inspect. But only your BI can adequately answer your question. Call. They don't bite.
