Maybe its a sign of the economy but I get about one or two resumes emailed to me PER WEEK by guys looking for work. And some of them are pretty good!
I wish I had more work as I would be happy to give some of these guys a chance to get some work and help me make my business better. Just wished my phone rang a bit more…

last week I needed a helper for ONE DAY to help me with a spouting job.
i actually could have done it alone-except 2 of the runs were 46 ft. pieces with some tree limbs and phone wires to work around
any how- put an ad on Craigs list
remember- this is a ONE DAY gig
I am STILL getting responses from that ad-still getting resumes
way,way over 100.
I put the ad on craigs list-walked my 2 labs around the block-by the time I got back 3 guys had already called
an hour later I decided I had better delete my phone number from the ad as my phone was ringing almost non stop.
I almost started a thread on this phenomenon myself-as I noticed THREE basic types to the responders
again remember this is an ad for a ONE DAY GIG !
1) Grossly over qualified- 20 plus years claimed experience as a trim carpenter, remodeler, cabinet maker, trailer full of tools etc.---includes a full resume and portfolio as an attachement
2) claims several years relevant experience-and available
3) mentions he is DESPERATE- really needs the work, PLEASE call!
now- I remember what Blue taught me- if you need a laborer-hire a laborere- if you need a cabinet maker- hire a cabinet maker
what I needed was someone to hold the other end of a piece of gutter
SO- I immediately delete any email with a resume attached, imediately delete anybody with 20 plus years remodeling experience, full size truck, trailer loaded with tools etc.-basically-they are in competition with me-and I don't need them on this gig
I also delete anybody who mentions how desperate they are
which leaves me with the guys claiming several years relevant experience
guy I chose-said 6 years experience- what that ACTUALLY turned out to be-was 6 years ago he spent part of one winter helping his uncle do some roofing and spouting in ERIE, PA-since then he has been doing low level factory/machine shop/welding work
all I really needed him for was to hold one end of the gutter and carry it up the ladder-paid him $15/hour for 9 hours-he was happy,I was happy-end of our "relationship"
