Visiting sister recently and this house is up the street. Thought the roof was really interesting. As I was taking the pics, a long time neighborhood resident stopped and chatted, said the roof used to be red/pink… they called it the Donald Duck House as kids. Evidently looked like some house in the cartoon, but I don’t remember.
Ever seen one like it? I suppose it was to look like a thatched roof…right?

My church (a converted home) has a roof like that, but not quite so extreme. IThe style seems to have been used on Arts & Crafts homes on occasion.

There's a house or two here in Minneapolis with that roof treatment (around Lake of the Isles, for other local guys), although I believe they used cedar shingles. I think it looks pretty neat.
That house on Lake of the Isles is really cool. It looks a LOT better with cedar shingles than with that asphalt...that thing is an abomination.
Yeah, I can see where that style could be a cool detail, but on that house in the pic, all I can think is "70's Afro" when I look at it. Looks like an early version of Kareem's head to me.View Image
The Afro House!
By golly, diesel, I think you just coined a new name for it, man.
From now on when visiting sis, it'll be "The Afro House".

Here's the house I was talking about.

This style of roof is called "Country Cottage" My wife has always
called it a 'Melty Roof' Here's a pic of an older house on Olympic
Blvd. West of downtown L.A. that has survived since her youth.
The roofs remind me of Thomas Kincad paintings when they are
done right. Check out this roofer.

good to know the name. i've also heard "false thatched roof" in my neck of the woods there are plenty of them and almost allways on tutors with shallow (8/12 or so.. i guess not that shallow but shallow for a tutor anyway) roof pitches.______________________________________________

Woo hoo!, there are some cool roofs on that site. I'm inclined to believe their byline; "Not Just Another Roofing Company".
I'm not particularly fond of the style, although I do appreciate the craftmanship it takes to do it. Sure is distinctive.PJ

I saw one of these roofs installed once. The framers roughed the rafters
in and the roofer blocked in the eaves and gable ends and finished the
sheeting. He had a homebilt gas fired water barrel to make steam
with 2 jigs to form shingle bends with and against the grain of the
shingles. The job took about 3 months for a 3 to 4k s.f. house and
the bid was over $100k.
Yeh, Thatched asphalt!!!
Yeah, there are one or two up on Pill Hill here in Rochester MN that are similar, though not so extreme. Have seen several elsewhere, but don't remember where -- maybe Minneapolis.
Pill Hill...iz at Plumber Hill? Worked in three houses up there this past year...only one "pill" out of three, by my count.
Pill Hill is the area south of 2nd St S and east of St Marys. Roughly west of 4th Ave W. So named because all the Dr's houses are up there. The Plumber house is on the southern edge of the area, with a fair amount of newer development between it and the main part of Pill Hill.
