Life is not a journey to the grave with the intention of arriving safely in a pretty and well preserved body, but rather to skid in broadside, thoroughly used up, totally worn out, and loudly proclaiming

    WOW!!! What a Ride!

            Doodabug -

I used to do carved and tooled leather for a hobby. Lots of people wanted things done and since it was a hobby, I never charged much. Somebody asked me to do a design for a motorcycle on one of the pieces and I said sure. I never realized how many different parts there are on one of those machines until I started to copy the design and carve it onto the leather. Given the 89 hours, I wouldn't be surprised if you felt the same at some point.

Glad you stuck it out. That piece looks wonderful. You can almost hear it roar.

BTW - do you ever put any kind of finish on your projects? Seems it might make the colors of the woods contrast better...

Any suggestions on finish? I painted a couple but not crazy about it.

You are a carver, you are a artist, my stuff is just patience.

As far as finsih, I agree 100% that paint is not the answer. The colors of the wood get lost under the paint.

What would I use? The easiest thing is probably a simple polyurathane - thinned so it wouldn't build up too much.  But that may not be the best. I have some back issues of "Wood" magazine; let me see what some of those guys do for a finish.

I'll get back to you as soon as I can.

Have you ever thought about making miniature houses and buildings for architects?I see them on TV and some even have a lift off roof so you can see inside.I think they make the mock ups for high dollar commercial properties but I've also seen them for a major remodel like adding a second story or an addition.Seems like your talent should be making you some coin if you wanted it to.^^^^^^

I think most architects do those in house but it may be worth looking into.

That is absolutely amazing work.  It's not just great technically, but you've captured the essence of the machine.  Sort of like a really great caricature.  Thanks for sharing it.

Maybe I'm late to this party, but I would love to hear more about how you got started, why you do it, what you do with them when you finish them... etc.  Or, if you've done this before, point me in the direction of the thread.  Thanks.

I started just goofing one day. I do it because it is fun. Some I gave to friends and family and donated some to charity raffles but mostly I do it for me.

Past posts, Made a couple saws today May 10, My 16x14 trike shop Jun28, Doodabug's 18 Wheeler Jul28, Doodabug's Dually Sep29, and Deiselpig Forklift.
