good morning all – – I’ve got 8 oak six-panel interior doors to hang – two questions:
jigs: router templates, is there a superior unit for routing hinge reliefs? three hinges per door, would like to do one set-up and use it on all doors and jambs – and the same question about boring handle sets – several fixtures are available, is there one that is superior?
hinges: – the owner wants a casing job that leaves no reveal – I can handle that, but with standard hinges, the pins will end up bound in the casing – I need wide leaf hinges – – National doesn’t list anything – does anyone know a source?
thanks, DOUD

I have an old Stanley hinge mortising jig that I love David. I don't know if they sell them anymore, but I know Bosch and Porter Cable still do. Tool Crib, or any commercial woodworking tool supplier should have them.
For 8 doors, it might pay to build a 1/2" plywood template, but if you think you'll be prehanging doors again, I'd recommend biting the bullet and spending the $250.00 for a three hinge jig. They are idiot proof and you'll be able to pass it on to some young guy coming up as you retire - that's how I got mine.
Might want to check ebay. Ive seen them there for about 1/2 of what they go for new. Ive used/use a Porter Cable setup. Havent tried anything else so cant compare. Dont really use it enough to say what I do or dont like about it ( have to refigure how to set it up again when I do use it). They are nice to have though.

David-- Have you considered using Soss hidden hinges? I've used them on a couple of jobs, and while they're a little fussy to install [ you really need to make a jig ] they eliminate the barrell problem. Plus, they just look cool! Woodworker's Supply [www.woodworker.com] carries them. They're not cheap and you might need more than three per door, but they work . Good luck!
Thanks Shep, - - this owner has definate vision on how he wants it - 3 brass hinges per door - (he's made all the calls so far and hasn't made an error, except for involving the original builder) - I will check them out for reference tho, and keep in mind for future - -
Hey David, can't you get overnight shipping up there?

I couldn't get into Seven Corners site, but you might try them, too
Good luck EliphIno!
lawrence makes long leaf hinges, i thought all manufactures did--
i thought all manufactures did--
Well, you would think so, but this is the hardest part of the job so far - locally, (in the sticks) everyone opens up their 'National' catalog and nothing - did a google on 'Lawrence' and their website is not intereactive and the suppliers do not list any long leafs in their online catalogs - will give a couple a call tomorrow - thanks, DOUD
i dont know where you are --you could try gardner hardware in minneapolis--i have gotten similar hinges from them 612-333-3393
Here's a link to an eBay auction for the MOABJs ("mother of all boring jigs"). Don't delay, because the auction ends tomorrow at around 11:30 PST. http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=2514734118&category=26197
If your not a member, here's a link to an online seller: http://www.kwiklocks.com/kwiklocks/k-installation_tools.html
You can do your own search for the best price: (kwikset jig 138). You will never regret the day you obtain one of these.
The hinge mortissing jigs are not currently available on eBay. I have purchaced 2 (Stanley) there for under $50 ea. in the past.
thanks brian - I watched the auction go - reserve was not met @$177.50 - new from QLs is $229 - think I'll order a new one tomorrow - this job will pay for it -
I'll keep searching ebay for the stanley jig, altho it'll be too late for this job - I've dealt there for 3 years or so - do you have a suggestion for search words? 'Stanley' turns up 5000+ hits - 'Stanley tool' gets a managable number but may miss some -
best regards, DOUD

The search string I used was
stanley (butt,hinge)
for a quick cheap to free site jig....
I just clamp a short 2x..usually about 18"..to each side of the door. Tap it till it's level with the door across the top......
and just free hand the router up to the cut line. Then get the corners square with a chisel. Works great...fast..and as accurate as you and your router are.

fair enough. i was doing quick and simple searches. what's true about finding good prices for these jigs on eBay is to spell template as "templet" and use "butt" in place of hinge. people like myself who search as "hinge template" will never find these auctions, which was a good thing in this thread...
the first one you passed on is not the type of jig that i was recommending. The second one is the older model (in and of itself very adequate), but notice that it's missing the little swing arm to set against the top of the door and header jamb. that's the other caveat about buying on eBay. Examine the photo. Well. Very well...

Just be glad there are no Beanie Babies named Stanley or Hinge. Searching for some kinds of products on eBay is a nightmare.

Lee Valley sells a 3-hinge template for routing hinges. I suspect not as robust as others mentioned in this thread, but a lot cheaper. American made, if that spins your crank.

I like the Bosch the best of the commercial jigs, especially for new work. The PorterCable is more cumbersome, but works. I've also used a plastic thing made by Carey...POS.
I've been using a homemade rig since my Bosch got legs, it's great for replacement work. EliphIno!
Old B&D kit for $80.

thanks Joe - got 6 hours to consider - if it were the stanley I'd do it - this seller has 116 auctions ending today - gotta wonder about expidited shipping - he's batting 99%+ - - may do it - thanks again- DOUD
Thanks bb - P-C is the one on the shelf locally - (we are in the sticks, and serious tool shopping is hours away or catalog/internet) - gotta get something on the way tomorrow - doors are here weds, stain and hang befor the end of the week - should have master bed/bath finished this week and Dale is going to move in - so sad to see the illness sap him - nice old cuss/character - "Da-vid..... you're do-ing a great - - job..." etc - we lay walnut t&g tomorrow -
I just finished a job like yours for a guy who won a lottery- I had the same type of doors to hang- I just built a custom 1/2" thick jig (birch VC) by 3" by 6'8" and put the hinges exactly where the architect wanted them. I spent about 1 hour constructing the jig for a tight fit all around and it worked flawlessly for the duration of the job. Use the jig tight to the header when doing the jamb and give yourself the amount of relief needed when doing the door (1/8" to 3/16") by overhanging the jig on the top of the door. By the way I have used a jig like this for many years and occasionally make a new one- it doesn't owe me a lot and if I ever touch the jig it won't ruin my router bit- I just make a new jig.
The door lock jig I use is made by Weslock and it worked fine for the job but I did sharpen the carbide insert for the 1" backset drill before starting and it cut the oak smoothly. I have had this jig for 5 years with no problems.
Other problem is tough because the door will bind using conventional hinges. Try a commercial supplier for 4" hinges. The above jig can be easily changed if you go that rout (no pun intended!)
I spent about 1 hour constructing the jig for a tight fit all around
could you expand on how you held the jig to the door and to the Jamb? -- seems almost too simple -
Just used 3 11/2" pins from my nail gun- it doesn't go anywhere especially in the oak jamb BUT you need to take care getting the jig OFF the jamb and door ( I used side cutters to pull the nails through the jig..
Hope this helps
Making home made jigs work great and do the job very well. I did that for years, but recently I invested in the Bosch Door and Jamb Hinge Templet Kit and the Templaco Deluxe Bore Master Kit. I do a lot of doos and it was worth every penny. "Don't take life too seriously, you are not getting out of it alive"
nothing like investing in the right equipment when it comes to this work, especially when you do alot of doors and doorways, don't you think Gary...
