hello , i would like to build an overhang for my sidedoor to protect it from the rain. do you know of any books or fine home building issues where this was addressed. i have an old home, i took off all the old clapboard so now would be the time to do it. any help is greatly appreciated. thanks

This involves basic knowledge of framing design, framing, flashing, roofing, and trim. Probably any book on basic home construction would give you the background.
The two critical areas are:
1) Properly attaching and bracing the structure so it doesn't sag or (worse) start to fall off.
2) Properly flashing between house wall and the structure's roof, to prevent water intrusion.
There are two basic styles that could be used: "shed" (sloping back to front) and "gable" (peaked in the middle and sloping off to each side). Deciding which style you want to use would be one of the first steps.

While there may be articles in the magazine, I don't recall anything specific to a small entry overhang......
