We have solid pine doors in our home with lever-type locksets. Finger nails are scratcing the wood. I have been trying to find something to protect the wood to no avail Any ideas?

Maybe you can make and install some thin, clear acrylic plating behind every door escutcheon. Cover most of the rail area around lever and round the corners so edges don't tend to catch on things (like those nails). Sheating with a 3M type adhesive on one side would be optimal.
Another (albeit more time consuming) option might be to tape off this same area and float off some clear epoxy sealer with a sheen that roughly matches the existing finish. Same idea as above, just a different material. Try it on a scrap of pine finished to match your existing and see how it holds up the "fingernailer".
Well, if heavier varnish doesn't do it then I suppose you'd have to use a plastic or metal plate.

There are ugly brass plates ( U-shaped ) that wrap around the knob location. These were meant to cover older locksets holes in a cheap remodel. They might come in other finishes.
however, this is also the first time I've heard of fingernails scratching door finishes.
My advice, trim the nails and be more careful.

Yeah, it kinda sounds like the finish is inappropriately soft for a door. If fingernails scratch it then so will coats and the like as people pass through.
