We are in the process of finishing a Victorian style house. Originally we had planned to do 1×4 clear fir trim on sides and 1×6 across the top of windows and doors with a crown on top. As it turns out, a number of the doors only have enough room on one side for the 1×4 so if you add the return of the crown it won’t fit. So we decided on corner blocks/rosettes which I don’t really like, they all look too similar.
In the article in FHB Jan.2000 #128 the article by Miles Karpilow ‘Recycled Redwood Wainscoting’ shows a window with trim and a corner block on page 68. This is exactly what we are looking for. Can anyone tell me how you would go about making such corner blocks? Also, it looks like the side trim is wider than 1×4. If we add the bevelled trim piece on the edge of a 1×4 would it look out of scale or would it be better to leave it plain? The windows and doors are clear fir also. If this is too difficult we are open to other ideas. This has been a very educational forum. Thanks for all the input. Krystyna

Krystina, The profiles in the article could have been one pc or may have been built up. Have never seen that style. Here in NW Ohio there were a cpl of profiles/designs of corner blocks and plinthes that were often used at the turn of the last century. Salvage yards have these on occasion. When employed on a commercial block remodel, we would take some shaped casing or small base and pie shape mitre cut them, assemble 4 pcs with glue and pins and mount these as corner blocks. They were unique to this project, not those bullseye style store bought blocks. You might mock up a few of those and see what you think. Best of luck.
