Hello everyone, I plan to replace a fiber glass shower pan with a tiled custom built shower pan. Before the tile setter builds the leakproof membrane I was told that a drain assembly needs to be installed. Can everyone tell me what type of drain I need to procure and if I will find it at a general hardware store or I need to check a plumbing supply store?shower is build on a slab , so no crawl space is available.
thanks for input,Ovi,

Here is the loction of a typical shower pan drain. http://www.terrylove.com/wwwboard/messages2/50931.html This drawing shows a plastic one.
Most of the time you should use a three piece drain, it has a drain body, a flashing ring, [thats where the membrane goes], and a adjustable strainer thats put where the tile setter wants it. I don't think that a hardware store will have this, plumbing supply is where you want to go. If you have pvc underground it won't be too bad, but is you have iron or steel you may run into voodoo. Luck.
Check this site johnbridge.com it's very good and they have the exactg answer you're looking for.

We've done a few shower pans for walk ins. we have them built out of copper, then get a cast copper or brass drain flange and soilder it to the copper and it will never leak, you don't have to worry about membrain failer or a slice or that peskie seal around that plastic drain.
