We all know about the el-cheapo microscopically plated $14.99 drill bits you can get anywhere.
I’ve got a nice grinder/sander unit that I can buy a bit sharpening jig for, but I wonder about the cost/value ratio. Companies like Lee Valley offer good quality HSS bits at a reasonable cost, and they appear to be sharpenable indefinitely. Do any of you bother to sharpen bits?
Thanks,
Scott.

drill doctor...
Life is not a journey to the grave with the intention of arriving safely in a pretty and well preserved body, but rather to skid in broadside, thoroughly used up, totally worn out, and loudly proclaiming
WOW!!! What a Ride!
Forget the primal scream, just ROAR!!!
I use twist drills from #60 to 1/2" on a regular basis, letter drills, fractional and number drills. The drill doctor I use is an older version.the 350 model which is the least expensive. I can sharpen bits from 3/32" to 1/2" as good as new.The smaller bits are a challenge in a drill doctor for a couple of reasons. They are short to begin with, tough to turn the bit so it locks in the flute guides.I reach in with a small pair of needle nose pliers as my hands are too large to reach the shorter bits.Very small bits I try to hone on a diamond stone or throw out. This would be bits smaller than 3/32"
The newer drill doctors are somewhat different,I do not know as I haven't used them. I imagine the learning curve may be easier, though I got fairly proficient after a half dozen drills.I screwed up the first one,by the time I finally got perfect cutting edges the 1/4" drill bit was about 1/8" shorter. That's a lot of lousy grinding til I got the hang of it.Read the instructions and watch the video that comes with it.If you do a search for drill doctor their website has a video description of how to use the tool.

Thanks. I'll give it a look. It sounds like a better option than the jig I was considering.Scott.
I had a box full of dull drill bits so I finally bought a Drill Doctor. Had a tough time at first and it sat on the bench for months until I decided to return it or try again. I read the directions, tried again and paid for it with 35 like new sharp bits an hour later. It's a real money saver.
same here. Scored mine offa Ebay for fifty bucks. The guy that sold it prolly' didn't wanna read the directions which takes all of five minutes.
I know...I know...we hate reading directions but they were pretty short to get through.
Save a fortune in drill bits now : )

Thanks all. Sounds like I've got another tool to save up for......Scott.
Love my drill doctor, when I need a sharp bit I have it now, no trips to town.
No one should regard themselve as "God's gift to man." But rather a mere man whos gifts are from God.
