I have a room 5′ X 13′. The 5′ ends are bearing walls. I would like to lower the ceiling one foot finishing the new ceiling with drywall, insulating above(vacant attic above). What is the proper way to construct the new ceiling, tie in to the ceiling joists or the the walls.

One good way to do it is with metal studs and track. I'd use 2 1/2" or 3 5/8" studs, 20 gauge.
Screw the tracks to the 13' walls, into the studs. Buy 10' metal studs and cut them in half, no waste. Place the studs in the tracks 16" on center and rock it. Done...Buic
