Drywall Autofeed Screwgun

Richie921 | Posted in Tools for Home Building on February 11, 2004 12:05pm

Hey all,

It is time for an autofeed screwgun.  I haven’t heard any good reviews of the Senco 14.4v Duraspin so I am considering either the Senco DS200-AC (corded) or the Makita 6834.  Does anyone have opinions about or experience with either one and can make a recommendation? Thanks.

Richie

Don't know about the corded version but we toasted the gears on two 14.4V Senco screwguns in about a year and six months. Warranty is one year. The gears and motor are one unit and cost almost as much as a new gun.

Senco pneumatics are great. Their electric stuff is not so great.

      Harpo,

Thanks for the reply.  I just saw the Hilti SF4000A cordless with autofeed and it looked pretty sweet. Has anyone used one of these?Richie

Forget the Hilti...just found out  it is over $600.00.

Wow. Find another Hilti rep. Friend bought one from the Hilti guy here for $220. There's "list" price, and then there's reality. On everything. Believe me, they have a lot of room to move on pricing if you're a decent guy to deal with. Or maybe if the rep is a decent guy. I don't pay any more for Hilti stuff than I do Bosch.

I kind of like my 14.4 Duraspin, and I've had it for . . . hmm, getting close to a year and a half. Hope that ain't a bad omen."The child is grown / The dream is gone / And I have become / Comfortably numb "      lyrics by Roger Waters

          RW,

I wouldn't worry...all the problems I heard with the Duraspin 14.4v was that it is underpowered (which you would have seen already) and the fasteners go in crooked (again something you would have seen already).  Nobody has said anything to me about lack of durability.  Which model do you have?  Is it 2300 or 4000 rpm?  Is the Hilti your friend got the corded model?  I saw that one for $220 but the cordless 36 volt was over $600.  The corded Senco is only $99.00.  Please let me know about the Senco cordless.  I was now considering just getting the autofeed attachment for my regular drywall gun.  Ahhh...decisions...decisions.

Oh, cordless you say. No wonder there was such a price diff.

I've been pretty content with the Senco. It's the cordless. While I've said in the past it takes a couple of tries to get the feel for it, it's not hard. Easier than riding a bike or learning how to drive a nail straight. Its just a technique thing. Though I have noticed I'm now in the habit of holding drills more straight than I used to and darn if I don't break so many tips as I did before.

I don't use it every day. Everything depends on the job. At the moment, I've got the snips, clamps, and cutoff saw out, but when the studs are done, then I'll be rocking. Honestly, the little zip tool that came with it is awesome. Beats the snot out of the rotozip, works twice as good at half the noise.

RPM - I believe its the 2300. The attachments seem to be available for most drills, but I can't comment much on them, not having used. I thought the Hilti gun worked pretty good, but I really wanted cordless. I give the guy enough business as it is. BTW, they're hawking sawzalls and giving away sawzall blades now as a promo. Man, get your hands on those. Really good blades. Lopped off a chunk of 2 1/2" galv pipe yesterday in nothing flat. Like warm butter."The child is grown / The dream is gone / And I have become / Comfortably numb "      lyrics by Roger Waters

I have the Wilwaukee (corded) and I am really impressed w/ it. The weakest link is the mandrels.

I have the Senco Duraspin with a Dewalt screwgun powering it. I also have the extension pole for it. I have used it for drywall,  subfloors, and decks. The tool is a real time saver. I chose to use a deck gun instead of a drywall gun for the extra torque. I highly recomened it if you don't mind being tied down.

      Hey all,

Well, I have to thank everyone for all the responses.  I finally decided on getting the duraspin DS200 attachment for my Dewalt corded drywall gun.  The autofeeder attaches to the nose.  I'll be starting a job this week and hopefully it will work well. Thanks again.
