I’m removing a rec room “Armstrong” style stapled tile ceiling and replacing it with drywall. I plan to attach the drywall directly to the floor joists and finish with crown moulding. Any possible problems I should be aware of? Special prepatations?

Don't plan on snaking any wire through that ceiling.
*If you are covering access to the electrical panel, run some conduit so you can still get to it from an unfinished area.Tile will disguise irregularities in the joists, and drywall without texture will show them. Strapping and shimming first with 1x3s gives smoother ceiling.
*And of course you can't cover up any electrical junction boxes or plumbing valves.steve
*tony.... isn't the tile ceiling stapled to furring?why would you take the furring down if you're going to drywall?also.. the furring will help with your crown molding.here in RI (and lots of New England) we furr our ceilings before we drywall..or...... was the tile stapled to the joists ? ...nah.....
*I did the same thing to my basement. The best advice is to think ahead. Do you need any more wall outlets in the space above? Run them now while you can drill up. Are you satisfied with lighting? I used some two bulb recessed fixtures (expensive but snuggle up to the ceiling between the joists) and was very happy I did. How about telephone or computer or TV cables? Run them now. Yes, run conduit by all means - maybe a couple from the panel if you're covering that up. I've already pulled some new runs in my house - I'd be ripping out sheetrock if I didn't use conduit.Good luck, Al
*Mike, My unfinished basement ceiling (in Mass) is plaster over lath board, directly attached to the joists. Developer built. I was stumped as to why I couldn't snake a wire.BobL
