Is there a reason to tape and mud the joints between the ceiling and walls if crown molding is being installed ?
Seems like extra work for no reason.
I plan to caulk the joint to stop air. Not sure about code and fire stopping. Wouldn’t fire resistant caulk work as well.
Ceiling drywall will be 5/8 fire-rated, walls – 1/2.
Thanks for any input.

Air sealing primarily-firestopping? Probably, fire taping is tape and one coat. No need to finish, no need to sand.
Would firecaulk work? if it's going to be inspected-it's up to them.
