What is the best type of drywall to use on a bathroom ceiling. I was thinking the greenboard, but I see it is not always recommended for use on ceilings.

My personal preference is 5/8ths inch rock. There is a 1/2 inch high strength rock for cielings that will span 24 inch and some like using it as it is a bit lighter than 5/8ths.
Second what Bigbill said. 5/8" drywall is a lot stronger.
As long as you get a good paint job on it and vent the space you don't need green board.
AGREE WITH ALL .. 5/8, good prime and paint, cieling board is falling out of favour round here, too brittle, screws along the butt tend to break it ..
If you can get 5/8" Greenboard in your area, that would be my choice in a bathroom.
I would have to buy from a "real" drywall supplier -- not HD or Lowes, as they do not stock it here.
Glue and screw to joists for the ceiling.

You may have a different code in your area, but on bathroom ceilings " no greenboard ". Greenboard only on walls.

As others said, if you properly vent the bathroom there's no advantage to greenboard or the fiberglass faced sheetrock.
Use 1/2" ceiling board. It is stronger and more ridged than the 5/8 is.
I am surprised no one has mentioned XP wallboard, or barney board. It is the new purple colored wallboard. Not only is it moisture resistant, it also has greater sound proofing qualities.
In any case, you should always use 5/8" drywall on ceilings. I think this is due the minimum span requirements, and with 1/2" you get sagging with anything over 12 o.c.
Well 1/2" is the way to go and that is what USG recommends unless you need firecode ceiling.
