The hatchet has a number of uses such as marking ceiling joists on the top plates quickly. Mainly though,I think it gives you a flat surface attached to a lever that when slipped between or under sheets, where you cant get your fingers, helps you manipulate them.

golden rule number 5 when in doubt chop it out. one more use of the drywall hammer. when installing drywall for money .choping small pieces off in the air is faster installation .rule number 4 when your thinking long your thinking wrong.Hence the reason for the hatchet. trimming with hatchet is better that lifting sheet over again.
