I am a builder in North Florida. My tapers just finished(453 sheets). I’m about to have the texture sprayed(double knockdown ceilings, orange peel walls). Should I prime the ceiling and walls before the texture is sprayed? My feeling is that I should mostly to prevent excessive moisture that might weaken the rock. Nobody in this area does it this way. They just spray the texture on bare drywall. Any opinions or suggestions are appreciated!
Thanks,
Squatty

what i usually do is prime 1st then texture. the main reason i do this is because it is easier to see what you have and have not textured and that it all looks uniform with no spots missed.
I agree. We always prime new drywall for textured ceilings for three reasons. 1 - It provides a white base coat so the finish doesn't look patchy. 2 - For that reason, you don't need to use as much stucco. 3- We find that the stucco sticks better to a painted surface as opposed to the dusty surface of freshly sanded drywall. We also add white paint to the stucco mix to help all of the above reasons.
My drywaller primes first because texture manufacturer recommends it. I hear if you don't prime first the drywall dries the texture too fast.
Smile. It could be worse. You could be me working for you.
I watched a guy spray acusti texture on a un primed ceiling one time and the hole thing ended up on the floor
never seen a wall primed before tectured applied. Most subs dont want to get set up on a job just to prime then break it down, tecture and then paint again.
you could size the finish before you texture. thin down some yellow type II PVA glue 5:1
This will seal the drywall just like primer for much less money. once textured youll need to prime again before painting.
