I’d like to buy a flat box for applying joint compound to wallboard but not sure what to look for – what’s a good brand Tape-Tech, Northstar.
Any help welcomed.
Thanks,
Brian

the cheapy at the box stores work fine
Thanks but I'm looking to purchase something of a little higher quality than the dumb down version of what the "big box" wants to sell the weekend DIY fool.
My big box stores sell three kinds of mud pans: cheap plastic which works just ok, galvanized metal which works much better, and stainless which is a modest improvement.

Sorry for the confusion but I'm talking about a tool that applies the mud evenly. Here's a photo that James posted:

• Three box sizes available — 7”, 10” and 12”(175mm, 250mm, 300mm).
• User adjustable blade holder fine tunes the crown for proper compound distribution.
• Standard and high-capacity EasyClean™ versions.

By "flat box" do you mean a mud pan? I'm not a particularly fast taper/spackler, so take what I say with a grain of salt... I don't use a mud pan. I don't even use a hawk. I just use a 12" taping knife to hold my extra mud. For the first coat or 2, 12" knife in my left hand, 6" knife in my right. For the final coat, the 12" spends most of its time in my right hand. I hardly use any other size taping knife.
Granted, I have to go back to the bucket more frequently than if I used a mud pan, but it's a lot easier to keep 2 knives clean. If the mud accidentally dries on the knife, it takes 30 seconds to clean it with a damp rag and resume. Cleaning out a mud pan takes a bit longer.

at the drywall store up here they sell Can-Am brand taping tools. They don't usually sell junk at the drywall store.

Only THIS is Can-Am!

No, but seriously, get the all-stainless version - the plastic ones with the inserted edge blades are hard to clean, the blades rust, and you skin up little curls of red or yellow plastic that get in the mud.

Thanks for clearing up what a flat box is. I didn't know such things existed, but I don't think I'll have much need for one, as cool as it appears, since I don't do a lot of taping/spackling.

no problem Don.. I just figured a Pic would say a thousand words..

Am I understanding this correctly--you hold up the whole box full of mud and use it like a knife to apply the mud? Doesn't it get awfully heavy after a couple hours? Guess I'm getting old, but my knife gets awfully heavy after a couple hours!
James,
Do you need to have the pump to fill the box or can you do without it? I think I've seen the pumps going for about $150.00.
Also, have you used other brands besides the TapeTech? If so what did ya think of them?
Thanks,
Brian

if they don't have what you want, it's probably not available.
Ames is the choice out west. Not sure if you can buy them though, generally leased.
