drywall patch , pipes in the way
Rather than try and glue a back piece in order to attach the drywall patch I use the “over and under” fiberglass tape idea. Stick the tape to the wall above the void between the pipes extending the tape past the hole, loosely, with enough tape to stick to the lower section. Cut your drywall patch and push it in place while holding the bottom tail of the tape until it sits flush with the wall, then stick the tape to the lower wall and you are ready to spackle. Have you ever tried the patch cutting the pc oversized an inch more all around than the hole you want to fill ......score the backside edges (cut through the paper only) and peel away the excess gyp board at the back.....leaving the paper flap.
Mud the flap, lay the patch over the hole, press in the patch flush to the surrounding, knife out the flap. Finish coats as needed.
