I would like to know how you pay your hanges and finishers. If I buy 20 1/2x4x12 sheets of drywall. I have a guy that says he will hang it for $10.00/bd and finish it for $10.00/bd. But he says he counts it after he hangs it. I thought it would be $400.00 total. His calculations say I owe him $520.00. Anyone help me with my math.

was he quoting the $10/bd based on 4x8s?
If he had to cut a board to fill in, that counted as two because of the extra seam.
The price seems to be 20 bucks a board hung and finished and hes figgureing more than you are . He wants to count the sheets hes hung before his price to you is firm . Thats the standard way to charge unless hes given a price bid on the whole job. I charge so many cents a foot and bill when Im hung out , not before. How else would it be fair? I just want paid on what Ive hung thats all. You seem to be wanting to do the counting before you have even bought it.
You mention "if " you buy. Whats with that ?

I like getting a set price on the front end... i know stuff comes up and i allow for that (even if i've never come to a lower number that what was quoted) I like to think that whatever trade it is... has looked at the job & plans and is the "expert in that trade"... pay'n by the board hung & finished sounds good til i had a dumpster full of 3/4 sheets.... pay'n by the sq ft is good also as long as we agree on the total sf on the front end... when ur buy'n the material and you purchased 15000sf of board and get charged for 20,000... and the dumpster is half full... something ain't fair...
it's rare i'll argue a bill or a price... but when they call and ask "man u got any work go'n" i have to tell em why i didn't call them...
i hate surprises on bills... it's uncomfortable and uncalled for and nothing will strain a relationship faster... misunderstandings happen.... but a simple one page " you will ... I will" agreement saves alot of friendships and relationships

This could be very simple. He put up your 20 sheets and ran out. So he bought, out of his own pocket, 6 more sheets and finished the job. Ergo $20 X 26 sheets = $520. You should be grateful for the free sheets.

Think outside the box.
But, hey, what do I know?
10 weeks and counting.
why not just ask him?
My calculations ...
I'd expect to pay ... roughly ....
$ .80/.90 - 1.00 per sq ft ...
material ... stocked ... installed .. finished.
I don't care what I can save by buying and stocking myself ....

Tim,
Forget the per sheet stuff he told you.
Period!
You asked for a price.
He gave you a fair one.
Stop nickel and diming and pay him, or do it yourself.
