There are lots of hardware stores and DIY centers here (Orange County, CA), but none of the ones I’ve checked carry USG First Coat.
What other brands of drywall sealer/primer are good?

I just finished a project using Sherwin Williams PrepRite High Build primer/surfacer and it worked great for us! It was the consistency of nacho cheese and really helped hide our cruddy finishing job.
Hey, thanks! Were you able to use a roller on the nacho cheese?
Another vote for SW Preprite...
Go to a drywall supply house. Pacific supply (roofing/ drywall) should be in your area.

Trust in God, but row away from the rocks.
If your surface is smooth regular old flat paint works fine. If you need a lot of fill power pva from most manufacturers is fine, or a step up is a block filler designed to fill the pores of concrete blocks which is very thick, but has a nice texture when rolled on thin. Block filler is one of my favorite mild hiding textures for no-texture finishes that normally show every imperfection. Interior walls are so forgiving I have yet to see a problem with any paint used as a first coat other than the amount of fill. For years the standard procedure in a small town was nothing but an extra coat of paint. If the work is done well that's not a bad choice.

Sherwin Williams Hi Build or Sherwin Williams Builder Solution Surfacer (similar to USG First Coat).

Thanks for the all the suggestions. I went with Sherwin-Williams PrepRite. They had High Build, but only in 5-gallon containers. That's a lot of nachos, more than I can use, so I bought a quart of the basic formulation.
I like Benjamin Moore Fresh Start latex sealer / primer.
Not much build but it is sandable when dry without clogging up the sandpaper instantly like many others.
I refuse to finish paint, but I will prime new drywall and trim (before hanging).
Priming the drywall puts an end to the drywall dust during the rest of the project and reveals any goofs which I have missed in the finishing.
I can go back with joint compound on top of the primer, final sand if needed and spot prime any repairs. Invisible.Never underestimate the value of a sharp pencil or good light.
