Drywall Stepped Borders & Soffitts

I am planning on doing a couple of ceilings with stepped borders, and one with a lighted soffit, but I have some questions regarding design which I can’t seem to find any good information about – Google has not found what i am looking for, anyway.
First of all, here are some examples of what I intend to do:

My design question has to do with dimensions. In the case of the stepped border, are there any rules on what sizes to make the steps? For example, in a 12′ x 14′ room, with two steps of 5/8″ drywall, what is a good width to make the steps so that they look nice?
Same sort of question with a lighted soffit – any good rules of thumb for dimensions?
Any suggestions, links to web sites, or suggestions for books/magazine articles is appreciated.
Thanks,
Frank

you'll be hard presses to find any rule for that kind of detail. I would keep in mind the sizes of my taping knives to be sure I floated a flawless surface.

Just did one a few months ago, similar concept, slightly different. I was dealing with a low ceiling (slightly less than 8') and wanted to put a ring of lights around the room in a border. The way I found the best layout was guesstimate followed by laying it out directly on the ceiling.
I actually changed the measurements about 2" in width once I saw it up there. BTW, I wound up using pine rather than drywall for my drop. Square, clean edges, held immediately preprimed so no problems with paint.
If I can find the pics, I will repost.

Thanks for the responses. Well, I guess that explains why I haven't found much on my web searches! I'll just try something, and adjust it until it looks good. I'll post my results and some pics here when I am done, probably in about a month or so.Thanks again!
