I am looking for feedback for best way to protect a forced air system from job site dust, especially sheetrock. We want to use the gas furnace, with its dry air, and not job site heaters (torpedos, etc.) that would introduce additional moisture issues.
I have seen the duct diapers, the light filters that protective products make and we usually double filter the return and use a pleated filter there. Any suggestions? Thanks, MC

Best and only solution is don't use the furnace as a construction heater. It usually voids the warranty. We have a form that assigns warranty problems to the general. Construction heaters show up fast.
I hear 'ya, and often we don't use the house furnace for just those reasons. We have an excellent hvac guy on this job and he told us he was ok with it, as he said, "you need heat, just filter it best you can". Except for possibly a big electric heater (job box I think I saw at the IBS builders show) most job site heaters stink, bring more moisture and provide very uneven heating and very unstable environment for the woodwork.
Just keep the filter clean and you will be alright, especially if your hvac guy is ok with it. I would use one of the filters made to filter for allergens.
you can buy a flexable HEPA quality filter blanket to cut to size for over the cold air returns. I think the last I got was at HD

Thanks, I will try the HEPA. Our hvac guy is pretty understanding, and we really want dry heat for the house. I am going to try the duct diapers also, to keep stuff out of the supply ducts.
in the past we've just put regular furnace filters over the cold air returns.....stuck them on with a couple drywall screws and then sealed the edges with clear duct tape.

Even a coupl eplies of cheeeseclothe is more than most guys do around here. Makes competition easy as all get out.My wife is a member of a sewing circle - they make quilts and other stitchery to sell and raise money for good causes. They were having work done on thebuilding. I stopped by to help her pick something up and was amazed to find the chop saw station set up directly over the cold air return in the floor, and the contractors using one of the craft tables to dump their own tools on. Dust every where and only half the stuff covered with drop clothes. Wife went ballistic justifiably, and I had a air cleaner unit in my truck so I loaned it to the club.Guess who got all the praises on that job by a couple dozen old ladies talking it up around town...the contractor spillling his crud all over or the husband who stepped in to save the day?
