Just got a new Bostitch framing nailer. Have never used one before. It takes “clipped-head” nails. Wondering what the difference is between clipped heads and full round heads (other than appearance). Why do clipped-head nails exist?

Not really answering your questions, just a tip: There are two kinds of "clip-head" nails...one is wire collated, 28 degrees (probably what you have); the other is the more popular 30 degree, paper collated (like the Paslodes).
Make sure which one you have before you go and buy nails.

clipped head nails can be collated closer together, because the clip is to allow the nail to be pushed out of the stick of nails without the head hanging on the nail behind. non-clipped nails exist because some less enlightened (defined as anyone who disagrees with me)codes do not allow clipped.
caveat: I have no real basis for any of the above. i'm justparroting what i was told by the tool guy at my toy store.
Clipped head nails can be strung together very closely by manufacturer and you can hold more nails per clip in a gun. The heads almost look like the letter "D" Full heads have a full head (nothing missing).
Some coded in some places do not allow clipped heads because the head is what holds.
I own a full head nailer and get aggravated at how often I'm reloading. I might look into a coil full head nailer.
More nails fit in the gun. There are areas that call for full head nails in certain framing applications but I have yet to run into it. I use clipped head.
Jason was right about the 2 different types of angled framing nails. I believe the Bostitch gun you have takes the wire collated ones and not the paper. Just make sure the nails are meant for your gun when you buy them.
paslode has come out with full round head, but close collated stick nails....the head is round, but is off set, so that the shank comes off the edge of the head....
