b We’re about to try to install a manual DumbWaiter.
Has anyone out there done this previously?
Any tips?
Thanks for all advice.
William
When deck posts exceed what the prescriptive code tables allow, it's time to consult a structural engineer for post sizing and possible bracing.

William, if you follow the directions sent with the dumbwaiter kit you will have no problems. Maybe, if you are building one from your own plans, you could contact Miller Manufacturing, Inc. 800-232-2177, and they will consent to help. But, since they manufacture and sell dumbwaiters, they may prefer that you buy their kit and then use their directions. I think that dimensions and clearances may be specific to the product.
*William, that's good advice from Ralph. Also, please don't overlook fireblocking issues.Safely, Steve
*William,I haven't installed one, but I did tear one out of a rental property I have. It was a home made job and what stands out in my meager memory is the counter weighting. I guess you'll have to experiment or check with a high school physics teacher as to number of reels on the pulley system vs. weight you'll be lifting.Don

I installed one made by Miller Manufacturing and it's _wonderful_. Their measurements were precise and their materials were top notch. After seeing the counterweighting, gears, slides, automatic brake, etc., I know there is no way I could have "home grown" one anywhere near as impressive.
Their installation instructions were pretty good, but I had to read them several times be/f they sank in. Everything is easy as long as you emphasize _perfectly_ aligning the track sections on which the unit rides. If these sections twist a little or misalign by even 1/32", the car will jolt or snag as its runners try to slide over the junction.
FWIW,
Jim
