Dura-coat Garage Floor Coating

sunedog | Posted in General Discussion on April 24, 2006 11:13am

Anyone have direct experience with this product? I searched and couldn’t find any discussions on this one on this site.  It is sold by Protect Your Surface out of Lindenhurst, NY (http://www.protectyoursurface.com ).  It sells for around $100 per gallon.  I like some of the attributes advertised, but I am concerned about the guarantee.  The wording is very vague:

“15 YEAR PROTECTIVE COATING WARRANTY

UNDER PROPER APPLICATION, THIS PRODUCT IS WARRANTED FROM THE PURCHASE DATE FOR A PERIOD OF 15 YEARS AGAINST: CRACKING, CHIPPING, PEELING, OR FADING OF SAID PRODUCT.”

I called and asked them for something more specific.  The sales guy said they would give me my money back if I had a problem.  I asked ofr that in writing but I doubt I’ll see it.

    Greetings sunedog,

This post, in response to your question, will bump the thread through the 'recent discussion' listing again.

Perhaps it will catch someone's attention that can help you with advice.

    Cheers

        one more was it.

Especially now that the thumbs up icon for high interest threads once posted to has been removed from threads a week or two back.

Now it's getting too complicated to tell what has been addressed already.

'Sides, only guys that have come back later to check their post with a recent "last Visit" date get a second bump.

Now if prospero starts removing that then forget it!

Thanks for the bumps.  I do check back frequently whenever I post something.

I'm somewhat surprised no one reading this has any direct experience with this product. I thought it was mass marketed.

I've pretty much decided against this particular product.  I did get something more in writing from them, but it still wouldn't hold water a few years down the road.  This is the complete warranty language:

          "15 YEAR PROTECTIVE COATING WARRANTY

UNDER PROPER APPLICATION, THIS PRODUCT IS WARRANTED FROM THE PURCHASE DATE FOR A PERIOD OF 15 YEARS AGAINST: CRACKING, CHIPPING, PEELING OR FADING OF SUCH PRODUCT."

What constitutes "proper application" and how would I prove that after the fact?  I think it would all come down to how benevolent they felt at the time (if they're even in business when I tried ot make a claim)."The road goes on forever, and the party never ends"

Have you considered an epoxy floor covering. There was a thread discussing this topic last week or so.

          2. sunedog | May 08, 2006 03:09pm | #7

Yes, I've considered epoxy.  I was interested in Dura-coat because I thought it was a true industrial coating that was formulated for tougher conditions than the home based products.  It looked to be easier to apply as well.

I think the product information is hyped up.  I will most likely use the Rustoleum product."The road goes on forever, and the party never ends"

You could try looking around over on the Garage Journal website, at http://www.garagejournal.com/ (when you get there, click on Journal at the top of the page to get to the discussion board.)  It's a site dedicated to garages, and there's a whole section of the board just for flooring.

The people there are mainly DIY'ers, but there are plenty of recommendations for and against various floor treatments.  I did a quick search of the archives but didn't turn up anything for Dura-Coat.

Wow.  Looks like a great source of info.  Thank you.  I'll follow up when I complete this project.  But it's a few weeks to a few months off right now."The road goes on forever, and the party never ends"

The written warranty (if they give it to you) may or may not be of much use.

A couple of years ago I used a two-part epoxy by Rustoleum to do a garage floor. It was labeled as commercial duty.  This was a residential garage.  After a couple of months it started coming loose at the points where tires rested on it for long periods (parked).

They refunded my purchase price with almost no questions asked. That was almost meaningless as the labor to prep and paint was many times the cost of material.  My customer wasn't thrilled. Neither was I.

Unless they cover the labor cost to repaint, the warranty is worthless.
