Doing some patch work on plaster walls. Have used some products that are setting compounds that you mix up that suppliers say is equivalent to the original USG’s Durabond, ie Easy sand, Rucco, etc. These have the supposed advantage of being easier to sand. My question is do you lose hardness for that quality. Is the original Durabond harder and more durable? I plan on using the material on patches and skim coating walls. Any help would be most appreciated. Thanks.

I like D Bond, For patching, second coating and corner beads on sheetrock it is great.
Patching plaster it work just fine. Skim coating may be another story though. I'm sure that there are products more better suited for that purpose.
Perhaps someone else knows better.
Durabond is quite a bit harder and adheres better than Easy Sand. I think Durabond is a great choice to achieve the "feel" of plaster. Of course, patching plaster is harder still, but also harder to work with.
The downside is that Durabond is very hard to sand so I tend not to use it for the top coats which is where the hardness MIGHT be noticed. Even though Easy Sand is not as hard as Durabond, it's hard enough that it will hold up to all normal wall usage except for maybe handball.

I started with Durabond, but years ago I switched to Easy Sand setting type joint compound for quick jobs and deep repairs.
Easy sand is plenty hard enough.
Then skim coat with regular joint compound or the Plus 3.

DB is much harder than Easysand and bonds better too. I use DB for first fill coat and bedding, then top coats with easy sand sometimes.
