Dontcha just love us smartazzes? To try to be serious, I don't think it would matter a whole lot. Maybe someone who does more tile than I do can give you a straight answer.

Don't take my word for it though. Put a little thinset on the board, let it set up and try yo scrape it off.

Yea,no problem in fact better! leaves a smooth plane for setting .
The mastics and thinsets don't care if it's smooth or rough,If your tiler don't like it don't use him next time,Tell Him! what should be further front in your mind is hang that stuff so your fasteners are set behind the surface,so as not to interfere with the bedding height,this is why I use galv ring shank nails,and take care not to beat it back so much you "cherry-up"(beartrack) the backer,It will cause a weak hanging point...
