Well, you can now get a miter saw with dual laser, one with a digital angle dohickey, and ones that slide, and even ones that are cordless, yet they dont catch saw dust worth squat! I have a dewalt 705 (love it) but any time I slice anything I produce a huge cloud of saw dust and have to vacuum half of my garage…. saw the hood by rouseau http://www.downdrafter.com/ but I am not willing to drop 199-170 on it! (also it seems to limit the portability of the tool!) I tried to make my own out of 1/4″ ply, and I got something that looks like a massive nose, but didnt work… has any one designed a dust collection system that works ?

Somewhere I saw an article where Gary Katz had built a dust collection setup for his shop mitre saw(s), but I can't seem to find it right now. Recollection is that he said even this was only able to get about 60-70% of the dust, and that in the shop only. I have found nothing better than the cheesy little bag hung on my DeWalt and Makita, and they both leave much to be desired!
I use my Fein TurboII.
I connect it to that dust connector on the back of my DeWalt 705, and it picks up about 75-80% of the dust.
It really makes a big difference. Its not perfect, but its the best I've come up with.
I have hooked up my shop vac to the dust port and it helps, but there is so much that shoots past... We gotta come up with a better solution though!
For about $15 at most woodworking places you can get a 12x16" plastic cowl that fits behind the saw. It is for a nominal 4" dust collector hose, but there are adapters so that smaller hoses can be used.
When I'm working in a nice area, I put my miter saw inside a 30" x 30" cardboard box....take the bag off first.
now I tape the top shut.....
I cut a slot on left side bid enough to feed in material, and cut a slot on right side big enough for long material to sick out other end....
Now I cut a hole in front big enough to reach in and operate the saw.....
Now I cut a small hole in the rear of the box to feed in my shop-vac hose, which I attach to the miter saw.....
I catch all but a couple of specks.

Sounds good, but I wouldn't want to try and do precision work (Trim) with my saw in a cardboard box. Wouldn't be able to see what I was doing...and probably cut the wrong 'digits'. (Ouch!) I always bag the area, (if in a finshed home) and just vac after the work is done. Your gonna have to do it regardless if you like to have a good rep for cleaning up after yourself. I really like a tidy jobsite...leave it clean and orderly everyday. But in remodeling, ya have too for sure.
