I want to install a dust collector below the stairs in my shop. The stairs limit the vertical lift of the upper exhaust bag to 48″. Does anyone know if limiting the vertical lift of the upper bag will be a problem?
I have not purchased the dust collector yet but am looking at JET 708639 DC-1100A 1-1/2 Horsepower or Grizzly G1029Z 2 HP Dust Collector.

Its the surface area of the bag not the shape or orientation, should be just fine.
Might wanna arrange it somehow so that it doesn't abrade a hole where it contacts the whatever that keeps it from ballooning up full profile on start up.

you will lose CFM if the bag cannot fully inflate. If space is a problem, switch to a cannister filter or look for a different type if DC. I have the Jet 1100 CFM, with a can filter. Anything under a 3 hp DC should be moved to the machine, when in use. You cannot run these through long runs of hose or piping.
Kc,
If you haven't purchased your dust collector yet please go back and consider a cyclone system.
All the big manufactures make them now and their's not a lot of difference in price.
I went through a few different "bag systems" before going to a cyclone, wish I had done it sooner.
