Hello, we’re redoing our 1906 Craftsman kitchen and keeping it as old-style as possible (with all the fun updates like a dishwasher, decent lighting, etc :).
Putting in an eating nook, a la Sarah Susanka (Not-So-Big House, Taunton Press) … an intimate place to eat as an alternative to our dining room.
We are thinking twice abt doing full-length bench cushions, due to the price (I can’t sew) and that they get dirty so easily. Thinking to have some smallish throw pillows instead– for under the butt, behind the back, etc. Are we on the right track?
Wondering what works and doesn’t work for yours…????
Many thanks!

The only problem I see with many small cushions is their sliding around, falling off the bench under the table where you have to crawl under to get them out, etc.. Maybe buy a ready-made large cushion and tie it to the back of bench. All cushions sort of have a problem in that they prevent easy sliding of the person into the booth. Vinyl cover may help the person to slip. Another idea would be to cover the bench with foam and fabric (something sort of slippery) or --just nail (with special nails made for the purpose) or staple the fabric--glue may also work.
We have just built an "L" shaped banquette area a la NSBH. We have chosen to put seat cushions on that can easily be wiped down and that are secured with velcro. There is also a slight lip on the outside edges of the wood frame.
A local seamstress will be able to measure for and sew your cushions for you. That may be worth it to avoid slip sliding around on loose cushions and you may find the more polished look preferable.
Check out a fabric called Kryptonite (no joking!) It's a contract fabric that is nearly impervious to stains and spills.
Good luck!
