I guess it’s buyer beware.
Trying to finish off my FH collection and missing some of those early issues. Ebay has first 24 issues for auction. Watch the thing for days. End of auction comes around. Figure I’ll bid it up at very end of auction. Down to the wire, I bid and window pops up saying I didn’t bid high enough when I overbid the last price. By the time I’m back the auctions over and the bid I trumped wasn’t even listed in the bid results. Neither was the first bidders bid. See if if I’ll play with that crap again. Wasted the evening waiting around too.
Anybody got issues 2 thru 6, 9, 22, 23, 24, 30, 32, and 41 they want to part with?

You shoulda sniped it. That is probably what happened to you.
I don't know how or where to do the e-snipe thing, but apparently there is a way to put in a bid amount, (the maximum that you would pay), and the bid does not show up. Until the last seconds of the bidding. Then, the snipe will bid in increments until your maximum is reached. It will always bid a few cents more than the last bid, until it reaches your maximum.

Proxy bid.
Also, programs are available that will let your computer snipe for you, while you work or sleepDitch
you can buy them on Ebay....no kidding

I have found the best way to aquire something on e-bay is to bid high enough to get it - whether there are snipers out there or not, if it is something you want, type in a number that will get it, or at least a figure such that if the bid jumps above you in the last few seconds, you give thanks for that person saving you from the responsibility of stewardship of the item -

Agreed David. Sniping is common on Ebay, so the only sure way to get what you want is to bid high enough. If someone else gets it they either paid too much, or your bid was too low. I used to bid a lot of real low bids and got some items for rediculously low prices because no one else bid on them. I also bought a lot of useless junk that cost more to ship than it was worth in the first place. I avoid eBay now, but do look for something there every once in a while. I just have to remember not to go there just browsing.
i learned to just bid. Avoid proxy bids and set what price youre going to pay. If someone out there snipes me, let that poor sucker buy the item. There is no reason to pay more then when you think is worth on an item.
If you know the value of the item set your proxy low to encourage snipers and just bid it naturally up to your value point. Nothing more fun the letting those snippers get hit with a high bid.
I agree Mark. Decide what you want to pay for the item, bid, and forget about it.
I've been through the same deal, and have gotten some great deals on things I didn't really want, and paid way too much for things I wanted.
Live and learn.
It's a great place, but the ultimate ebay deal is hard to score."I stand by all the mis-statements that I've made."
I bid on ebay frequently. I rarely am disappointed with the results (except when I make a bad product choice).
I think you should always determine what a given item is worth to you. The tendency is to get to your limit then go "just a little more". This can be a problem. Many people get into trouble with credit cards with this same mindset.
I use proxy bidding all the time. In fact, I didn't know that you could bid another way. I might have set my preferences to proxy bidding automatically when I set up the account, but that was a long time ago. I don't know why you wouldn't proxy bid, but that's up to you.
I have lost many items in the last half an hour of bidding. It seems that many people wait around till the last minute to bid, maybe even do searches on items with <1/2 hour or something like that. I have found the best way to combat this technique is to join them. I always look at the end date/time. If I know I can get on the computer 10 mins. before the ending, I will do that and bid as low as I can right before it expires. I have no way of proving it, but it seems like when I bid early I always get outbid by someone at the end, but when I wait I can usually get the item cheaper. Of course, this is probably just a perceptual issue, but you got it anyways.
Just remember that it's unwise to pay almost new price for a used item. Good luck.
I never bid more than something is worth. But if you bid cheap, usually you don't get the goods. And I too refrain from upping the bid because I got outbid. Set it and forget it. Also all bids are proxy bids except when you bid the minimum amount, which I do on things I like but don't need. If anyone else bids at all then you "lose".
Only a fool will bid the first day. In my experience both buying and selling on Ebay, early bidders most often are losers. Early bidding only drives up the cost of the item, a technique Ebay loves to encourage thru they're proxy bidding ( "bid your max right now an we'll e-mail you when you're outbid" what's the point of that? other than drive up Ebay's commissions ) If I REALLY, REALLY want an item, I'll snipe it in the last minute or so, but I don't bother using sniping software/websites. Otherwise, I usually just wait till the last day of bidding, place my maximum bid, and walk away.

What got me besides the bid results not listing the original first bid or bidder was the winning bid came in 18 seconds before close and the runner up was 5 seconds before close. these guys were $2.50 apart and over twice the bid of the first two bidders.
Where's that Ebay school again? Delaware?Half of good living is staying out of bad situations.

In the first few years of e-bay, I would dive bomb the bid in at the end....I would set up a stopwatch and bid so that it came in in the last 5 seconds....I always won. I bought a Mazda Miata on e-bay that way...it is a honey, and my wife kept it for herself(it was SUPPOSED to be raced in spec Miata class,SCCA) I've bought tools, toys, etc...on e-bay, but since the new sniping software has emerged, I have not been very interested. I pissed off a whole bunch of bidders with my tactics, and got plenty of nasty e-mails, but I always played by the rules.
I worked for my ex father in law doing major auctions in NYC. I was a "lotter". We set up lots of forclosed businesses. Long and lots of stories. I know ALL too much about auctions, and Ebay is as close as you can get to a ligit auction. Pay what you think its worth TO YOU. Wait till the last minute if you have the time so as not to bring to much attention to the product. Thats about it. Shills dont really work on Ebay.....maybe lots of the sellers friends bidding to make it look worth while is all I can think that may happen.

Andy- I use to frequent different auctions till I started gathering too much junk. Saw some funny stuff go on I was sure was illegal. Listed items being removed from auction during auction because owners decided they didn't want to sell. Seen some auctioneers scanning the crowd inventing false bids to pump the price up. Did you run into shenanigans during your time in that trade?Half of good living is staying out of bad situations.

Dont even ask...we're talkin NY here. I saw paid lotters become shill's in my younger years just to jack the prices up.... lotters are given over hundreds of dollars BEFORE the auctions started as a tip. All lotters have their own lots set up.lts set up for after the auctions. After all...its chapter 11. The judges that set the paper work for the auctioneers get paid mega for blank pads of OK's. (just my speculation of course) You have to remember that in a chapter 11 (bankruptsy) the past owner has run with their money and where does the auction money go? A-duh.....course this is all speculation on my end of course. I worked as a lotter over thirty years ago....I'm sure its different today...lol....just was what I speculated in my younger years.

PS....If you ever go to an auction tip the lotter before you bid <wink wink> and see them later......thats what I was told anyway??????
