i bought a 100 year old residence three years ago.
i have hand sanded with belt sanders, vibrating sanders, and sanding blocks and even used heat and a bladed scraper.
the result was very time consuming and unsatisfactory.
consulting with local painters i was advised against both pressure washing with water and against sand blasting.
i have recently learned of soda blasting and find contradictory opinions on-line regarding its effectiveness.
anyone have any experience with soda blasting and paint removal from antique cedar shakes? any suggestions for other solutions?
ideally i would stain after the paint removal but i am doubtful that i would achieve that level of removal, so a consistent coat of new paint may be the best i can hope for.
i have seen that i will need to wash off the soda prior to paint or stain application and that a citrus additive is recommended. again – anyone with that experience?
looking forward to some experienced, professional input or knowlegable amateur comment. thank you, in advance. louis

There is a stripping tool called paint shaver pro which will strip down to bare wood very quickly. It can be connected to a hepa vac for safe removal of lead based paints.
If you want a stained finish I would find some quality cedar shingles and replace all old shingles. Old shingles are not likely to be original. In the same way roofs need to be replaced so to wall shingles. You can check by removing a couple to see the nails. IMO sandblasting will not regardless of the medium used give you a proper look.
