If it's had some routine maintainance (grease mostly) there isn't too much to go wrong. Grab the drum and rock it side to side and up and down- there should be little if any play in the bearing the tub rotates on ( it's usually a tapered roller bearing). Make sure some yokel hasn't cut the ground off the plug (got zapped pretty good years ago). If the motor has been replaced, make sure it's the proper size and type. Make sure the dog(s) that hold the mixer upright are not too worn ....... no fun having the mix dump on the ground by itself. Check the belts and fire up and try it. I'm leery of the real cheap mixers ...... Stone and Crown are good brands. Make sure the mixer is big enough to do want you want it to do ...... frustrating on a big job making little batches.
*Info on cheap mixers-Just finished up a couple of jobs totaling about 3yds with a Harbor Freight 3 cubic foot mixer. Crude as heck, strong motor (really!) limited capacity (doesn't want to mix much over 1-1.5 cu feet very well). I'm pretty satisfied with it. Best part, only $180 delivered. Mist of their stuff is horrible, but I'm really pleased.Mike
