I had one. It quit in a few years. Never felt like it was working well. Replaced it with an Aprilaire pleated filter. Much better.

I can't speak to the latest thoughts, but I can share mine. Simple mechanical filtration with a nice deep pleated (at least 4") filter is the most practical. An electrostatic filter cannot match the performance of a MERV 8 or greater filter. I like the Honeywell versions for the filter housing. Changed once a year, provides excellent filtration and minimal pressure drop (if sized appropriately).
