Hi Im purchaseing a home this month with an outdated sunken livingroom. I will have to raise the floor 6 inches to bring it up the next floor height. My question is should i remove the hardwood and subfloor to sister up to the existing floor joists, or would it be an issue to stud up from the existong hardwood floor?
Thanks in advance.

Without seeing it it's hard to say but I would probably add new joist crossways to the old ones. They might need to be ripped a little to make your new plywood deck flush with the old one. I'd use 6" TimberLok screws to attach the new joists to the old ones. It should be a fairly easy and quick job.

Thabks fo the input. One more question. Should i demo the existing hardwood and sufloor to get to the old joists?
I've been thinking about it and can't think of a good reason to remove them. At most I might pull up the hardwood but wouldn't mess with the plywood.
Yeah, the plywood will add additional stiffness, though it might introduce the potential for more squeeks. It might be wise to use adhesive under the new joists.
I was on the same thought processs. Didnt see a good reason to demo it. If there are an squeaks ill run some screwn down the old hardwood to eleviate them then use adheasive between the new boards and dardwood floor.
Thanks again for the input!
The government solution would be to lower all the rest of the floors to make them level....
? nice
