I work for a builder, i.e., I’m given all of the things that fall through the cracks, and have been given the task of learning about sprayed-in cellulose insulation. Currently, we have fiberglass batts installed in the walls and loose cellulose blown into the attic.
I’ve read a good bit about sprayed celulose, including how to spray a uniform layer that will adhere to the wall cavities. I can’t find much information about companies that make the equipment used to spray cellulose. Does anyone have a opinion about which manufacturors are better? Also, can one rent this type of equipment?
Any and all advice would be greatly appreciated!

Chris,
You are talking about wet-sprayed cellulose insulation? I have had it done and contracted with a local supply company here in Central PA to do it, they have their own crew but also sub out some jobs to another crew from W PA, sort of itinerant insulators. They had a huge blower installed in a panel truck, strong enough to dense pack using a 3" hose(!).
The dry cellulose was mixed with a water spray as it left the blower hose, the water hose was duct-taped to the 3" cellulose hose and both were controlled by separate switches.
Material that came out past the surface of the studs was shaved off using a 3' wide rotary brush that they simply ran along the surface of the studs, it was sort of shaped like a bow saw.
Excess insulation was vacuumed back up off the floor using a hose connected to the suction end of the blower and re-used.
They used 3 crew, one for each above jobs, trading off to make sure the hopper was full.
The wet-spray process was very slick, you could try calling them and seeing if they are willing to share information:
