estimating concrete

cutawooda | Posted in Construction Techniques on December 1, 2002 08:51am

What is the exact formula for estimating concrete. I called the rental yard today and he wasnt even sure of the measurments. Is it length x width x depth in feet devided by 27. then add 10% for just in case.

then that figure x  $ per yard

so an 11 by 22 slab with 4 inch,  and a perimeter beam of  1foot x 18inches would be:

(only one long beam, it is against the house)

10 x 20 x .34 devided by 27  = 2.51  interior minus the beams

20 (sidebeams) + 22 (front beam) x 1.5 (depth) x 1 (width)  devided by 27 =

2.33

2.33 +2.51 = 4.84…..+  10%   5.32 yards   @89.00 per yard  473.48….

Did I do it right? is there a grading curve? thanks for ay help

    cutawood,

You got it. Here is an online calculator.

    http://www.concretenetwork.com/

Make a couple of stepping stone boxes for the extra. A fat leaf(iris) in the bottom is a nice touch.

Expensive concrete you got there. Where are you? Plain ol 5 sack mix? Joe H

Here is how I figure it.

    Length x Width x Depth x .0031 = Yards of Concrete

I know others have their own ways but I don't even listen to them.

Length x Width x Depth in what units?

      1. Saw | Dec 02, 2002 07:12am | #6

        Length in feet

        Width in feet

        Depth in inches

        24' x 24' x 4" x .0031 = 7.1424 yards of concrete

We pour foundations along with everything else and this is how I figure concrete. The same formula works for the walls too, you just have to look at as being flat work.

          Got it. Thanks.

concrete here is $37 a yard for 3000. secert to concrete , round up to nearest yard, and NEVER ask or look to see how much left in truck. that way you do not feel bad if a yard is left over.

I did this at first thinking my calculations are wrong, wasting money, but then found out concrete plants load heavy on saturdays so there can go home early.

    Cutawooda,

No problem with your math except is you are trying to get the complete cost don't forget the sales tax, In my state that would add  almost 5 bucks a yard to what you've got.  It is and easy mistake to make.

Here is how I would figure your pour.

    11' x 22' x 4" x .0031 = 3.0008 yards for the slab

    11' + 22' + 11' = 44' is what I came up with for perimeter beam

    44' x 1' x 18" x .0031 = 2.4552 yards for the beam pour

    3.0008 + 2.4552 = 5.4566 yards + 10% = 6.00226 total yards

I'm not sure what you mean by a perimeter beam, around here we call them rat walls (short foundation for a floating slab). I suspect that they are actually two foot deep, 4" slab plus 18" beam pour. We usually add a half yard or so depending on footing depth due to hoe operator and the truck driver must also add a half yard or so to cover their ####. It pretty cheap insurance when you look at calling out another truck to finish a few feet of a pour.
