If anyone would have something like that it would be Hafele.

I assume you want to build your own cabinet, instead of buying a completed unit from these people, right?

If so, I would at least call the importer and ask if they would be willing to sell you the hardware package. The first person you talk to may say no (not our policy), but if you play your cards right, you may get someone higher up who might sympathize and agree to sell you what you need. You might get really lucky and they will give you the name of the outfit that makes the hardware package, and you can contact them directly.

But don't expect much of a price break. It is the unique hardware, and not the cabinetry, that give these units their value.

    Good luck.

Ive bought the hardware kit from lee vally I wont be getting to it till the new year but the hard ware looks solid and it;s the only one I could find that would work with a Queen bed

Take a look at that first one on the left hand column, you could make that one without any hardware from them. All that stuff is readily available at any homecenter.

wow  3k for that...  ok we know furniture is keystone or better (cost x2)  with high end stuff more like cost x3....

i see less than $400 in material and thats with the sheets all at retail... and i see nothing that yells "quality"

i also see no hardware that i couldn't make in a few hours... and most of that few hours would be spent thinking...

interesting concept and glad you posted it  I need to build something at the lakehouse for when we have 10 kids for the weekend... If it was for our own use... i think some simple pivot points and some flat bar stock with holes and pull pins and it'd set up and down in less than a minute...

After laughing at the price tag, I thought, "top guys is going to fall out, and the bottom guy is going to lose his pillow" (don't see a headboard to keep the pillow from sliding of the end)

If Mom ever got around to building a house, I'd be tempted to suggest she include a br with built-in murphey beds.jt8

You'd have to be a pretty good welder/metal fabricator to do that hardware. What would you do for the mattress frame?********************************************************

Ahh Nikkiwood, the man made his own spiral stair case with a welder and cutting torch!

Seriously, I looked at that hardware and having been a welder/fabricator in my earlier days the first thing I thought was, hell, I can make that for a lot less then $2500!

I dont see $200 worth of metel there and I know that I could duplicate it in less then a week, including the cabinet.  Now I dont know what you carps get up there in Minn but down here in Iowa we dont make $2500 a week so I'd probably fabricate it!

Well, my knowledge of metal fabrication is about at zero, and my tools would consist of a hacksaw and a drill. I think that leaves me out of the loop on something like this. <G>********************************************************

Never despair.  Add a couple of good files, and you can make anything from mild steel.  I do, and with a 110v MIG welder, I do fine.

Despair? No, it's just a matter of time. When the autumn of your years starts to close in, you think much more about how and where you want to spend your time. So, I have a list, and sorry to say, learning about metal fabrication and welding is not on it. If I were the OP, I'd just have to shake the bushes to see what kind of price I could get on buying the hardware. <G>********************************************************

When all the other college-bound in HS were studying hard and taking AP classes after lunch, I was taking welding and metal fab.

            Still was Star student.

And you're probably happier than all those AP types.........But I guess I wouldn't mind being an investment banker this year with Goldman, Sachs and being in line for all the billions (yes, billions) they're passing out for year-end bonuses.********************************************************

Thats how I came about my metal fabrication knowledge.

All the other kids were off to college and I thought, "what the hell are they thinking, there's more money in welding then those college degrees will earn them."

Then when I was 30 I decided I wanted to go to college, it wasnt as easy when you had to raise a family along with homework and such but.......

learning about metal fabrication and welding is not on it

Its a lot more romantic then it sounds!

It was a living, pretty good one at that. I'm glad I know how but I wouldnt want to go back and do it full time again.

I often think that the mdf dust is hard on us but that smoke you breath in while welding/cutting steel cant be all that healthy either!

Yeah, and think of the angina and ulcers those poor investment bankers are heading toward, working in that pressure cooker atmosphere...... <G>********************************************************

Thanks for all the help. I plan on making it in a few months (welding is the best route). I'll be looking to see if I can get a close up picture of the pivot mechanism, to see if it is anything special. Would love to have it powdercoated instead of paint, but maybe a nice hard automotive finish will suffice. Will keep all posted, thanks again.

      2. ponytl | Dec 19, 2006 05:39am | #16

I'm pretty fair with a welder.... and I like metal.... i buy metal like some guys buy wood...

the mattress frame appears to be nothing more than 1" sq tubing and i'd bet  with the same type frame & springs as you would find on any cheaper discount store kids bed....

as far as fab'n up the hardware...  i don't see a big issue... might take a few minutes with some cardboard strips to figure out the pivot points... someone had to build it...

That is the first time I have seen a 'bunk bed' style murphy bed. Here are some other murphy bed manufactures.
