Example to encourage the young people

I needed a widget today; using a MC clutch cable for a hood release mechanism. Needed to retain and mount one end to the frame.
This was made from a much larger chunk of aluminum. Now it’s pretty darn close to 3/4″ x 1-1/2″ x 2″. But, get this – all cuts were done in my old DeWalt miter saw, with whatever old blade was in there!
(2) 3/8-16 blind tapped mounting holes, (1) 1/4-20 tapped through for the setscrew. 3/8″ thru-hole for the nose of the casing; 1/2″ csk for the fat part that I’ll setscrew to retain. Tapped it all holding it in my hand.
I did use a table-top drill press for the holes
0.130″ clearance slot for the cable to slide into place – again, cut with the chop saw, with a block of wood for a stop.
Gave it a pretty finish with 100-grit sandpaper in the trusty 5″ palm sander, really holding the thingy in my palm.
Who needs that damn mill? Granddad always said you could do good work with good tools or good techniques

Thought you might like this with all the creative things you do.This is an example of what a lifetime of good work & a little imagination can do my uncle is 83 and still going strong tinkering with cars building additions and a little time for his hobby building miniature engines and other things from scrap metal . By the way all these engines work he fires the steam ones using a little sterno or lighter fluid and the VW engine also works I don't know where he bought the spark plugs but I assume at a model shop

Wow! That's some REAL machining!
DW took the summer off with the kids home. They just started back; she's promising to kick butt.

Thats awesome! Thanks for sharing. Bob's next test date: 12/10/07
Quote of the day: "...can't be done, it will take too long, not enough pipeline capacity, yada yada but yet they don't apply the same skepticism to their own "solutions" such as wind and biofuels"
DW reminds me there are a couple of bisque-fired sets down there, waiting for glaze. They didn't photo too well - they have a deep impression, but it's hard to see in this light.
This set of 6x6s is for our man Cal (shhh, don't tell him!) Queen Anne's Lace, Daisies, and thistle-I-think.

Scared me for a minute when I misread that to say you made the cuts while holding it in your hand!
'Course I do remember you getting in JLC for a nasty cut, don't I?
Anyway, glad to see that it worked out for you and thanks for posting it!
